Are you a creator interested in building situated encounters with generative language?

UKAI Projects is inviting eight artists looking to explore generative language through site-specific immersion (sound, projection, or otherwise). Each artist will receive technical support, customized workshops, a $500 honorarium, and access to our 7,000 sq. ft. space at 379 Adelaide St. West (4F) in Toronto. A showcase on May 10, 2024 will allow artists to share what they've been doing.

Artists are not required to generate any outputs from this process and participation in the May 10, 2024 showcase is completely voluntary.

Supported Studio Dates: March 26, April 2, 9, 16, 23
Open Studio Dates: March 21 - April 26, 2024 (10 am to 6 pm - or later when requested)
Showcase Date: May 10, 2024

We are being asked to deal with a world where language created by machines may soon surpass language created by human beings. It would be relatively easy to dismiss all of it as ‘factitious’, as a sham or artifice. Language is a tricky thing though, and it is mediated and masked in ways that defy easy categorization.

So, we are launching a residency to explore being shipwrecked on this island with nothing but the accumulated knowledge, beauty, bile, and vernacular detritus of human history.

What can we build with it? How will we rearrange it? How will it express our condition?

Generative language refers to text generated by artificial intelligence or related cognitive technologies. Advances in generative language have been rapid and unsettling.

What happens artistically and culturally when the volume of “artificial” language far outpaces that produced by human beings?

How might these tools be leveraged in service to creative work?
